Today was an exciting day at Coles House as the demolition crew started the job of removing the current house (an ugly mock Tudor monstrosity) from the site to make way for AR Design Studio’s new 700sqm house.
Located in a stunning private setting west of Petersfield, the new five bedroom house is bordered by acres of established formal gardens. The concept for the design seeks to connect the new house with the existing gardens rather than impose itself on them. The design is set up to respond to 5 existing ‘events’ occurring at the edges of the garden with 5 key views from the house.
The form of the house is based on 5 simple forms set and divided by the existing site axis around a courtyard to create the views. These forms are manipulated to the specific views and positioned in a staggering arrangement to touch the ground and rise to the sky connecting the house with the landscape around it.
The landscape flows through, under and over the house in the form of open terracing, a swimming pool, long views, a lowered courtyard, and a green roof which touches the ground in the form of an animal hide and steps up through the house to the tower.
The house is due to start on site later this year.
