Woodland House has won a Future House Award!

We are incredibly pleased to announce that The Woodland House has won a Future House Award. A great well done to the entire team here at AR Design Studio for bringing this project to life.

The site lies within a pocket of houses surrounded by Forestry Commission conifer plantations; this deciduous woodland creates an enclosed, intimate setting during summertime but opens up to the valley in winter. The angular geometry responds to the views and contours of the site, growing in plan and elevation and mimicking the hillside undulations of the wider landscape. The geometry is further reinforced through the materiality and detailing, with diagonal larch cladding accentuating the angles of each volume.

The use of timber frame construction played an important role in the success of Woodland House. This approach championed the principles of material "honesty", both in terms of sustainability goals and its integration within a rural forestry setting; timber's importance extended beyond its structural role, permeating the entire design, from external cladding to interior detailing. This fostered a visual and tactile continuity, creating a sense of harmony.
