AR Design Studio secure planning approval for latest project, Coppice House
Coppice House is a private bespoke replacement dwelling set against the backdrop of the beautiful New Forest National Park. We specialise in particularly sensitive sites such as this, requiring us to have a lighter touch approach, and develop designs which add to the beauty of the space through the views developed and the relationship built between the building and the natural surroundings.
The site itself is surrounded by mature trees to the North and South-East, and is home to a beautiful mature garden – well-loved and groomed by the previous owners. Unfortunately, the original house is tired and failing to meet modern day regulations, requiring a new property to be built on the existing footprint which shows deep reverence for the site’s garden and surrounding landscape.
Coppice House is comprised of a two-storey central block with an additional two rectangular blocks on the North-West and South-East which reach out into the landscape to address the stunning surrounding panoramic views of the property. The form is defined by the convergence of vertical stone walls which are cut through by low slung, overhanging horizontal roof planes which divide the mass. Addition of a stone chimney creates a strong vertical accent to the design. These convergences define the spaces within the property and create a strong visual continuity from inside to outside.
Strips of double height glass act to divide the mass even further whilst creating strategic picture views into the landscape. Timber walls and louvres fill the gaps between the stone blades and glass – creating a strong contrast in materiality whilst enhancing the connection between the building and the natural garden and wooded context of the site.
