Coles House

Located in a stunning private setting west of Petersfield, this five bedroom house is bordered by acres of established formal gardens. The concept for the design seeks to connect the new house with the existing gardens rather than impose itself on them. The design is set up to respond to five existing ‘events’ occurring at the edges of the garden with five key views from the house.

The form of the house is based on four simple forms set and divided by the existing site axis around a courtyard to create the views. These forms are manipulated to the specific views and positioned in a staggering arrangement to touch the ground and rise to the sky connecting the house with the landscape around it.

The landscape flows through, under and over the house in the form of open terracing, swimming pool, long views, a lowered courtyard, and a green roof which touches the ground in the form of an animal hide and steps up through the house to the tower.
